With a lot of people experimenting with DIY Solar Power these days, I figured it might be a good idea to take a look at the advantages and disadvantages that can be reaped by building your own solar panels.
Reasons to build your own solar panels include:
1. Cost Savings:
By building your own solar panels, you stand to save thousands of dollars. The price of a conventional off the shelf system will set you back a few thousand dollars, where as building your own panels will only cost you around $200 in readily available materials.
After installation there is only minimal maintenance requirements, just give them a wipe over every now and then to make sure the maximum surface area of any panels are exposed.
Free energy! Yes you heard right using solar you will slash your power expenses massively, if your home is anything like mine you can expect to save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars per annum.
Any excess energy you no longer need can be sold back to the power company.
2. Help save the planet:
This is an extremely clean form of energy. No harmful emissions are given off during the harvesting, production or manufacturing of Solar Energy.
As long as the sun shines in the sky there will be an abundance of this form of energy, its 100% renewable and as such doesn't impact on the environment.
3. Become independent:
You will be able to get away from it all, go camping and power your appliances by using a homemade solar panel. Free of government regulations, restrictions and charges, solar energy helps you "stick it to the man".
As we can see from the above advantages, diy solar power makes sense to use as our Alternative Energy Source. As for the negative there really are none aside from having to spend some time building your own panels.
