Solar oven lab question!?
In science we built a solar oven, with just tin foil, cardboard boxes, things like that. Then we cooked s'mores on them outside. Now we have to answer questions about our ovens for a lab.
Will both the marshmellows and the chocolate reach their melting points in th time alloted?
For that question, I am unsure. Only the chocolate did, but why is that? Can you please tell me in a simple answer.
Chocolate melts at 86F - melts in your mouth. This melting point is due to cocoa butter. It's a very unique fat in that it melts right around human body temperature.
Marshmallow melts at about 100F - doesn't melt in your mouth.
Next, a chocolate bar is quite dense and conducts heat well, compared to a marshmallow. Marshmallow's porous structure acts as an insulator so even when the outside temp is above a marshmallow's melting point, it takes a long time for the inside to reach the melting point.
This is why you don't melt the chocolate directly to make s'mores. You use the molten marshmallow to melt the chocolate.
