If we look at annual figures, anywhere between three and six billion trees are being chopped down worldwide. This has to do with the demand for goods that are created from trees. Such as timber to construct homes, paper for writing on and even toilet paper for, well you know. Regrettably, we need the items that the trees produce but we can do something about the depletion of our timberlands.
Trees are celebrated on Arbor Day and the aim of the celebration is that we need to plant trees at that time but this is not truly dealing with the issue. The reality is, trees are not being planted by most people. If people could plant a tree, it would make a big difference.
The worldwide population is likely more or less in the 7 billion mark. Of course, you can never be sure of the precise numbers for this. The number of trees globally would be increased if each person used Arbor Day as a reason to plant a tree. The chance of this occurring is remote.
So, planting trees is something you need to consider if you are worried about the air we breathe and the Earth. I am not confining this to planting trees on simply one day each year. Every month is a good goal or why not each week? We have to try to compensate for those individuals who refuse to plant trees even though they go on using the earth's valuable resources.
Each year on Arbor Day, the number of trees planted is only between 8 and 15 million. Thus on an annual basis, we have a deficit more or less 5 billion trees. This situation continues to get worse.
Whereas people must make the effort to plant trees, I have an idea that might resolve this once and for all. It could be made a legal requirement that anyone involved in chopping down trees must replace every tree chopped down with two newly planted ones and this would go a long way to resolving the problem.
We will have to continue to resolve this situation ourselves until there is the political willpower to make these changes. In actual fact, restoring the amount of trees required is definitely doable. If every month, roughly 10% of people in the world could plant a tree, that would make up for the numbers being felled every year. Annually, this would mean the planting of around 7 billion trees. And that 1 billion surplus of trees are just what we need in order to get our tree population back to where it must be.
