Photovoltaic Systems: Financial Benefits

The only time when Photovoltaic systems, along with all other forms of renewable energy, are going to be able to effectively take over from conventional energy is when it is cheaper and more powerful. That is, the economic situation is going to have to be right for it. So we'll be looking at the financial benefits that are available right now.

Solar Energy: How To Make Money

The traditional way that you can make money with photovoltaic systems is through the savings that you make on your energy bills. And indeed that is the way that it is going to have to work if this is going to be a sustainable way of using renewable energy.

However at the moment the technology is not at an advanced enough stage to make this possible. Going on the savings that you make alone it would normally take around 25 years for you to pay off the cost of the solar installation. That's why the UK governments has introduced the feed in tariff.

When you take advantage of the feed in tariff, it means that after you have got a solar installation you get paid for all of the solar energy produced by your solar panels. And if you don't use that energy then you get an extra amount because it is exported to the National Grid for everyone to use.

What this has achieved, by making solar energy in to a better investment, is that there have been many more solar installations in the UK. So although it still costs the same to get an installation, instead of taking 25 years to pay off the installation costs, now it usually only takes around 10 years.

Why do Governments Incentivise Solar Energy?

The question is though, why has the government incentivised solar energy? The reason for this is quite simple, it is due to the danger of global warming that comes about from burning fossil fuels.

With all of the talk about global warming, carbon dioxide has got a bad name. Although there's a good reason for this, it is not actually a "bad" gas, it is actually essential to our survival. Without it plants would have nothing to convert in to oxygen so we wouldn't be able to breathe. We also need the greenhouse effect so that the world does not become too cold.

The reason that releasing carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere is a problem then is that if there is too much of it then there is going to be too much warming. This can result in a number of very unfortunate consequences that we would like to avoid.

It is possible, for example, that the Earth warming up more than it should could lead to ecosystems ceasing to function. If that were to happen then we may not be able to grow food in the quantities that we are at the moment, meaning that not everyone would have enough to eat.

With this being such a crucial issue, instead of asking why governments are incentivising Renewable Energy Sources like photovoltaic systems, you might ask whey they are not actually doing more. If they did do much more though then the economy would be at risk, which would lead to much suffering as well.

At the moment then the best thing that can be done is to put as much money in to the renewable energy sector as possible without harming the economy too much. With more money, the Solar Energy Companies are going to be able to develop new, more advanced technologies. And eventually government help will not be needed at all. At least, that is what is hoped.
