92 Buick Pk Ave alternator would not charge until I shorted field & charge lt. together; consequences ?
92 Buick pk ave 3800, battery good, alternator tests good out of car, does not charge, chg. lt. on, problem?
Is there fuse or relay in series with alternator excitation wire? Where is it located?, repair manual says is 15 amp at location 5 on int fuse panel but location 5 has no fuse or wires . Heavy charge wire is good so are connections. Charge light is on, battery is not charging. Alt tested good on bench two seprate occasions. Regulator is built in to Alt, battery charges properly with external charger, The alternator is a 3 wire, 1heavy output terminal, 1 plug with two wires . One of the plug wire goes to dash charge light circuit, other plug wire is the field supply wire and is supposed to come from the mysterious F5 (15 amp) located in the int panel.
I shorted field & chrg lt. wires together at Alternator plug, now charges and regulates - will this cause other problems? never did find F5
If you leave the wire connected all the time , - it could cause the alternator to "run the battery down" - the problem here would be - if the alternator has a "leak" of some kind that would allow it to "draw" electricity from the battery while car is not running! This is not a normal problem, but I have seen a number of alternators that had "leaky" diodes, - but still put out enough to keeep the battery charged properly!
So --- if you are stranded somewhere, by all means hook it up that way and get car home! BUT it is better that you find fuseable link, or broken wire that is not letting the power come from ignition (with key "on")- since everything is and works like the car was designed for.
I have changed many "old cars" made before alternators over,- and just put "field" wire on hot side of ignition somewhere so it turned on and off with key, -- having no problems at all!
