Is a high efficiency furnace possible in my basement?
Hi all
I had the gas company come out for a new furnace and they said I can't put in a high 90%+ efficiency furnace because where my furnace is located, it is under ground level. The furnace sits in the middle of my basement (not next to a wall) with no windows. He said high efficiency furnaces need to be piped directly outdoors so I can only get a 80% mid-efficiency.
Is this correct? I have to make a decision soon so please help.
Pretty much so.
A high efficacy furnace at 90+ needs to be vented in a plastic pipe. There are 3 types

You can't use a clay tile furnace pipe like in the less efficient models because the gassed will eat away at the clay tile.
This link doesn't claim there is a distance limitation

Consult with a heating contractor. Tell them what you have & your concerns before they come out.
Estimates are usually free, so check with a few for price & the highest efficiency model you can get.
